Meet three extraordinary individuals, whose persistent environmental activism has helped to preserve Southwest Florida’s natural beauty for all to enjoy.
Rhonda Roff founded S.I.N.G (Save Our Glades Now) to organize opposition to the proposed construction of a coal plant in Glades County. Such a facility would have allowed mercury and other contaminants to destructively seep through the watershed destroying many species and negatively impacting large wildlife preserves such as Corkscrew Swamp.
Ellen Peterson is one of the Grandmother’s of environmental protection in Southwest Florida and she has spent four decades fighting battles to preserve nature and promote human rights. Thanks to her actions the beautiful waterway of Fisheating Creek remains accessible to the public.
Lee County Commissioner Ray Judah spearheaded the beach restoration of Fort Myers Beach, championed the acquisition of critical water resource areas in the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed and led the successful effort to put the Conservation 20/20 initiative on the referendum in 1996 to purchase environmentally sensitive land. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his work.
