Amy Bennett Williams

Amy Bennett Williams has been writing about the people and places of Southwest Florida for well over a decade. Her commentaries often extol the beauty found in the commonplace objects and places – and are delivered with a touch of tenderness. Amy Bennett Williams started at the News-Press in 1988 as an obituary-writing clerk/reporter. She left to edit Gulfshore Life Magazine for five years, was named Florida Magazine Association’s Editor of the Year in 1997 and returned to the News-Press in 1998. She lives in Buckingham with her husband, Roger, and two sons, D.P and Nash.

Thanksgiving arrives in Florida in a timely manner – at the beginning at the harvest season. News Press Essayist Amy Bennett has been doing some back yard harvesting and will preparing her signature relish for the holiday. And once again, she shares it with us.

RECIPE:
1 pound fresh cranberries, washed and picked over
10-12 kumquats, washed and seeded but not peeled, quartered
1 1/2 cups sugar, 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled and grated, Dash of salt
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons Cointreau or other intensely orange-flavored liqueur


Combine all ingredients except the 2 tablespoons of liqueur in a saucepan and simmer about 30 minutes, until the sugar is dissolved and the fruit is soft. Remove from heat and stir in the remaining liqueur. Chill before serving.
