Last week Florida citrus leaders gathered for the annual Citrus Conference to discuss the state of the industry. Some of the topics discussed were how to fight citrus canker and greening to the winning the battle in the supermarket isles. We'll also talk about one of the foods most available today - mangoes. And, if you're a smoker how do you feel about paying more? Plus, will you wear your seatbelt more now that it's the law?

There's a battle brewing in the Gulf. In the end the casualties could be Loggerhead Sea Turtles or Grouper fishermen. There's currently a moratorium on long line fishing of Grouper in the gulf. The National Marine Fisheries Service is looking into the full effects of the long lines on the Loggerheads and whether or not there is an alternative that doesn't hurt the fishermen's ability to make a living. We'll hear from the fisheries service as well as the Gulf Fishermen's Association about whether or not a compromise can be found. Also on the show we'll talk with Barbara Peterson of the First Amendment Foundation and the challenges of protecting the Florida Sunshine Laws in the world of Twitter and FaceBook.

Plus illustrator Debra Jane Carey’s new exhibit, “The Birds, Bees, Flowers and Seeds,” at Bok Tower Gardens takes us on a journey through the world of pollinators.

is finished. The researchers are now putting the data together in a
report expect later in August. We'll discuss the study and the possible
implications of the information collected. Also...we'll talk with

Almost seven-hundred people die annually in this country from heat related illnesses. Temperatures right now are lingering in the mid -90’s. Add in the heat index and humidity and it feels closer to 110 degrees. Emergency managers have begun to issue heat advisories. What are the signs of heat stroke and how can one protect themselves if they have to be outside? We're going to talk with folks from the National Weather Service about these latest heat waves. We'll also talk with the folks from the Lee County Health Department about the dangers of heat related illnesses. Then we'll learn some tips on making our homes more energy efficient during the summer from Florida Power and Light.

Meet a local art teacher who’s making a name for himself with his sculptures.

primarily with large pieces of driftwood. We’ll learn more about his methods and his goals as an artist.
Plus meet several women behind what’s called
“Peace by Piece” – it’s
an effort to give local women artists more exposure, and to raise money
for a good cause in the process.

Florida's high school graduation rate
is one of the worst in the nation. A program trying to change that is
graduating more than sixty students, who either dropped out or were in
danger of dropping out, this week. We're going to talk with the
administrator for Lee Life Skills Center
about the program working to help kids from 16 to 21 get a diploma.
We'll also talk with a reporter from the News Press about a recent article that claims Florida universities are giving out too many good grades.

The Education Leadership Summit is coming to Fort Myers this week. It's a gathering of top educators from across the country. The program is hosted by the American Society for Quality. We're going to talk with Principal Don Bryant of Tropic Isles Elementary,
winner of the governors Sterling Award, to discuss the summit and the
success of his school. We'll also have a conversation with Republican
State Representative Tom Grady from Naples about the future of charter schools.

Many teenagers spend their summers working at part-time jobs to make a little money…but with a tough economy many of those jobs no longer exist or are filled. We’re joined by a member of the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board to learn about a program to help people between the ages of 14 and 18 find work in places usually out of their reach. We'll also talk about the job market for those just out of college with Alison Flick from FGCU's career development center. Plus, imagine sitting by your phone for three days waiting for a professional baseball team to call you up for a chance as a big league player. We talked to Tyler Bighames of Estero High about his experience in the 2009 draft.

Edison State College professor Adrian Kerr just returned from Egypt. He was one of a small group of people with a rare chance to enter one of the largest pyramids in Cairo. Kerr will join us in studio to discuss the arduous task of getting into the pyramid. And we’ll discuss his latest book “Ancient Egypt and Us” that describes how we still use many ancient Egyptian technologies and ideas in our everyday lives. Also…sea grass is on the comeback in Sarasota Bay…scientists say they’ve achieved something many considered impossible.

Corso splits his talents between painting and blues guitar and his time
between Nantucket and Naples. He’s an American impressionist painter
known for light-filled landscapes of Martha's Vineyard and Cape Ann.
His paintings are sought by collectors and hang in private and
corporate institutions around the world including the Ritz Carlton
Naples and Georgia Sea Island. He’s also an inventor who builds his own
guitars and loves to tinker with fancy cars. The art and music of Frank
Corso.
Plus the Lemon Bay High School theatre troupe
in Englewood is named as one of seven to perform at the International
Thespian Festival this month. We’ll find out what it took to get to
this point and what it will take to get to the performance.

We'll also discuss preparedness...according a recent Mason-Dixon poll most people living along the coasts are not prepared for the next storm. We'll talk with Ray Stone of Travelers about having a plan and knowing exactly what's in your homeowners insurance policy. Then we'll continue on the theme of coastal living with Abby Sallenger, author of the book "Island in a Storm."

There are tens of thousands of children in Florida that are living in abusive homes or with parents that neglect them. That's where Guardian ad Litem comes into the picture. This is a network of groups representing the different judicial circuits of Florida. There's also a program in Collier County called Voices for Kids of Southwest Florida trying to recruit more volunteers for the Guardians. We'll learn more about becoming a volunteer as well as hear from those who are volunteering now.
