Slavin is Assistant Managing Editor for World and National Security of The Washington Times and the author of "Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies: Iran, the U.S. and the Twisted Path to Confrontation.” Prior to joining The Times last July, she was senior diplomatic reporter for USA TODAY, responsible for analyzing foreign news and U.S. foreign policy. Beginning in 1996, she covered such key issues as the U.S.-led war on terrorism and in Iraq, policy toward "rogue" states and the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The Naples Council on World Affairs presents a speech by Brian Latell titled The Castro Brothers: Cuba: What next? Latell is the Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies at the University of Miami. Latell has been a Latin America and Caribbean specialist for more than four decades. During his 35 years of service in the CIA and the National Intelligence Council he advised White House and other ranking American officials and members of Congress on Latin American developments. He is most recently the author of After Fidel: The Inside Story of Castro's Regime and Cuba's Next Leader and a newer, expanded paperback edition, After Fidel: Raul Castro and the Future of Cuba's Revolution. For the last three years he has been employed by television networks as a Cuba news consultant and commentator.

His expertise on Turkish politics is manifest in his book, “Ruling but Not Governing: The Military and Political Development in Egypt, Algeria and Turkey”. He is currently writing a book about the United States and Egypt. He will address Turkey’s struggle between secular and religious rule, and her controversial entry into the European Union.

Leonard Spector is the Deputy Director of the Monterey Institute’s Center for Non-pro-liferation Studies and he’ll discuss the risk of the spread of nuclear weapons. Spector was formerly at the U. S. Department of Energy where he served as an assistant Deputy Administrator of Arms Control and Non-pro-liferation at the National Nuclear Security Administration.
